In earlier times, the Church would tell us how to think and live. If we followed its prescription, we could relax. But these days, religion is losing its hold. The cold-hearted secular world simply makes more sense to the modern mind. In this environment, there is only one thing we can replace religion with: ethics. Or. more practically, an ethic. We can memorize one easy ethic, carry it all the time and support all decisions with it. We can make it our solid floor in life. It has to be a pure and simple idea that can be universally applied, like "I will never hurt anyone if I can help it". We must lean against it, sit on it, carry it in the backpack, breath it year after year, decade after decade.
I wish I had seen this way back then.

Aldous Richards That is so well expressed, Stan. I love the whiteout parallel. Not only is it memorable but it is very sound thinking. We absolutely need, each one of us, to develop an ethic, as a kind of rudder to steer us through - or as a 'moral compass' in the blizzard of delusion and diversion. I think, too, that you understood what I said the other day about my personal standard. I didn't use the word ethic, but essentially it is one. Distilled, it is, "work on the side of the creative force, not the destructive."

Stan Burfield Right. Your's is an ethic for oneself dealing with oneself, which is half of a normal life, The other is dealing with others, the other half of life. My ethic. Together they cover everything.
Aldous Richards Truly, my ethic, or standard, is the way I deal with others as well as myself. I try to avoid doing, saying destructive things to others, or in some way or other manifesting negative, destructive behaviour, energy and so on,. Creativity, to me, is more than simply being a creative artist. It means aligning myself with what is nurturing, manifesting the creative choice or behaviour rather than the negative. That stance embraces too many elements for me to articulate at this point. (I am on my way out to a meeting...) :-)

Stan Burfield Yes, your version is both efficient and general enough to be applied to all situations. Perfect.
MaryLee Bragg It's never too late.
