“Pray, what things interest me at present? A long, soaking rain, the drops trickling down the stubble, while I lay drenched on last year’s bed of wild oats, by the side of some bare hill, ruminating. These things are of moment. To watch this crystal globe just sent from heaven to associate with me. While these clouds and this sombre drizzling weather shut all in, we two draw nearer and know one another. The gathering in of the clouds with the last rush and dying breath of the wind, and then the regular dripping of twigs and leaves the country o’er, the impression of inward comfort and sociableness, the drenched stubble and trees that drop beads on you as you pass, their dim outline seen through the rain on all sides dropping in sympathy with yourself. These are my undisputed territory. This is Nature’s English comfort. The birds draw closer and are more familiar under the thick foliage, composing new strains on their roosts against the sunshine.”
Our weather here lately has been very similar.

Jenny Getsinger Stan Burfield Alas! I cannot find my copy at this moment. You might also enjoy "Henry David Thoreau The Poet's Delay: A collection of Poetry by America's Greatest Observer of Nature" illustrated with watercolors by Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, etc. from Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Jenny Getsinger Thoreau's cabin site was above the highest water levels of flooding Walden. He knew a lot about swamps and water and would not have built in an area that flooded. In fact, Concord even now has very strict bylaws protecting their wetlands and river floodplain from construction.

Jenny Getsinger Mary I didn't mean my comment to be insensitive to your current situation of flooding.

Jenny Getsinger The reviews say that Thoreau's poetry wasn't that great, but it's a nice book.

Stan Burfield Ah well, it's the content that's important. His prose is poetic itself.

Jenny Getsinger It's worth it for the art reproductions, in addition to Thoreau's poetry.

Stan Burfield Yeah. I can see in my mind right now that painting of Homer's of the guys in their rain gear on the little boad on the heaving ocean. A poem in paint.

Julie Ali Wet in Edmonton as well with the rain like small jewels stuck to the window pane and the wrists of the fir tree outside my room. The wet has peeled off the dust skin and left footprints of water in the grasses by my house. Blessed wet.
